Domestic violence

Crime prevention is a priority in Alberta for the RCMP. Alberta RCMP is a member of the Police Advisory Committee (PAC). This multi-agency board is championed by the Alberta Justice and Solicitor General with a mandate to generate greater awareness of domestic violence, create a specialized response and enhance police training efforts. PAC created the FVIR form used by officers on the front lines, and more recently, they created the ‘Strategies for Safety’, a handbook for officers to use when working with families.

Training

Alberta RCMP is committed to improving investigations and services surrounding domestic violence. The Domestic Violence Coordinator provides training, as well as the operational and analytical assistance that frontline officers need to carry out quality investigations. Allegations of domestic violence can be difficult to prove in court. The Family Violence Investigation Report (FVIR) was developed to assist responding officers in gathering all of the background information required to effectively assess the immediate situation, identify safety strategies for victims, and determine suspect management strategies. An online training program also helps officers gain greater insights into how to investigate domestic violence scenarios.

Focused teams

Domestic Violence Intervention Teams (DVITs) are made up of RCMP and partnership agency personnel who work together to assess risk and create individualized service plans that provide coordinated access to community supports for all family members. They apply an evidence-based, risk-focused approach to cases and work with families to identify and solve the problems that are triggers for violence. The number of DVITs across Alberta continues to increase and meet with substantial success.
