Red Deer RCMP advise of heavy police presence – Update #2

News release

On March 18, 2024, at 4:36 p.m., Red Deer RCMP received a report of a stabbing in the area of 50 Avenue and 52 Street in Red Deer. Witnesses report that the victim was attacked by an unknown suspect who then fled the scene. This victim was taken to hospital with serious life-threatening injuries. Red Deer RCMP immediately deployed all available resources to the area to tend to the victim and locate the suspect.

Within minutes, officers located the suspect and attempted an arrest on 51 Avenue and 48 Street. The suspect ran and was chased down by RCMP. While effecting an arrest, the suspect stabbed one officer multiple times and bit another. The suspect was subdued and arrested. The injured officer has been taken to hospital with serious non life-threatening injuries and has since been released.

Simultaneous to the suspect being arrested, RCMP were made aware of another stabbing victim in the area of 48 Avenue and 50 Street. This victim was taken to hospital with non-life threating injuries, treated and released.

RCMP have charged a 34-year-old individual, a resident of Red Deer, with:

  • Aggravated assault of peace officer
  • Assaulting peace officer causing bodily harm
  • Aggravated assault (x2)
  • Assault with a weapon
  • Possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose
  • Assaulting peace officer with intent to resist arrest (x2)
  • Resist peace officer in execution of his duty
  • Carrying concealed weapon

The individual has been taken before a justice of the peace and remanded into custody with a next court date set for March 20, 2024, at the Alberta Court of Justice in Red Deer.

"Our officers were able to respond to this incident and locate the suspect in less than 10 minutes, says Superintendent Glassford Detachment Commander of the Red Deer RCMP. "The injuries to our officers highlight the dangers that police face when responding to emerging and dangerous threats that repeat offenders pose to our communities."

The motivations for this attack are still under investigation.

Red Deer RCMP would like to reassure the public that there is no danger to public safety at this time. Members of the public are asked to avoid the area if possible as travel may be impeded while investigation is underway.

An update is anticipated as the investigation progresses and more details become available.
